What is Smart Match?
Smart Match is a new feature within TeamBuilder for automatically filling in teams based on desired team size and maximizing student satisfaction! The tool puts the most students on their highest rated projects possible. We know how time consuming student team formation can be, especially for larger courses, and this feature is designed to help.
When testing this on real project placement data, we found a 60-80% match between the auto placement and actual, human supervised student project placements. Not bad for a single click!
How do I use Smart Match for student team formation?
- Have students complete at least one round of bidding.
- You can do multiple rounds and factor all of them into your Smart Match but at least one round must be completed to feed data to the system for allocating student teams.
- Go to TeamBuilder (Dashboard > TeamBuilder) and click the Smart Match button.
- Set your parameters and click Perform Match.
How to set maximum team size per project
Available as a workspace setting, (email firstname.lastname@example.org to enable this) variable max team sizes are supported. Once enabled, when creating or editing a project, there will be a Max Student Team Size field, pictured below. Setting per-project max size will override any general max size for that project.
What's next from this feature?
Smart Match 2.0 (currently planned for summer 2024 release) will allow you to set custom attribute scales for a custom match algorithm. Stay tuned!
